Musk Pours New Cash Into Senate Fight

A massive new injection of funds from Elon Musk's political committee targets the final days of the Texas Senate race and broader midterm efforts.

Elon Musk has significantly increased financial support for Republican candidates during the final stretch of the midterms. A pre-election report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday evening revealed that the entrepreneur provided more than $76 million to his personal political committee, America PAC, during the first two weeks of October. This substantial transfer of funds marks a major escalation in spending as the election approaches.

The committee deployed nearly $43 million in that same two-week period. Consequently, the group entered the final phase of the campaign with a cash balance of nearly $47 million. This liquidity allows for continued high-volume advertising and outreach in the days leading up to the vote.

The Texas Senate contest received the largest share of this new investment. The race attracted $15.2 million, a figure that is double the amount the PAC had spent in that state throughout the summer months. The allocation was split between negative and positive advertising. Specifically, $12.4 million was directed at attacking Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million was used to promote Republican candidate Ken Paxton.

Daily filings indicate that an additional $9.1 million has been spent against Talarico since the initial report period. This brings the total spending against the Democratic candidate for the cycle to nearly $28 million. This sum represents approximately 40 percent of everything the PAC has spent on supporting or opposing candidates. Furthermore, the committee has shifted its strategy toward digital platforms, spending $11.4 million on online ads in the same two-week window. This digital expenditure is now close to the combined total spent on mail and texting campaigns.

Musk remains the largest known individual donor in this election cycle. Analysis of Federal Election Commission filings indicates he has given more than $445 million to Republican political groups. Of that total, more than $165 million has been directed to America PAC since July. The committee has declined to provide comments on the new filing.

Beyond financial support, Musk has actively engaged in the campaign through social media. On Wednesday, he posted on X that there is something deeply wrong with Talarico. He further described the candidate as a creep and claimed without evidence that Talarico would vote to take away children to transition them. Earlier in the month, Musk amplified a false claim that Talarico had been treated at a mental health facility. Talarico responded the same day by stating that there is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator.

Current polling data suggests the Texas race remains highly competitive. An Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely Texas voters, conducted from October 17 to 19, found Talarico leading by two points. Talarico polled at 48 percent while Paxton polled at 46 percent. This difference is within the poll's three-point margin of error, indicating a toss-up contest.

The stakes for Musk extend well beyond the outcome in Texas. If Democrats secure control of the House, leaders of upcoming committees have indicated they will investigate his role in the Department of Government Efficiency. They also plan to examine his companies' federal contracts and what California Democrat Zoe Lofgren described as an astounding number of conflicts of interest. Unified Democratic control of Congress would present even greater challenges for the billionaire.

Silicon Valley Democrats have identified an additional target for scrutiny. In a letter to the White House delivered on Friday, they demanded an investigation into restrictions on SpaceX's Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna signed the letter. They vowed that the next Congress will closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Mr. Musk's businesses.
