For professionals and small business owners, the landscape of digital assistance is shifting toward tools that handle complex workflows rather than just answering simple questions. As of October 22, 2026, Anthropic has introduced a new application called Claude Duet, which is specifically engineered to automate and manage tasks for these users. This launch represents a strategic move to compete directly with other emerging platforms, positioning the tool as a partner for productivity rather than a general-purpose personal companion.
The new agent is built to serve a specific niche, distinguishing itself from personal assistants that might book tickets or handle errands. Anthropic clarifies that Claude Duet is not intended for these casual, personal uses. Instead, it focuses on creating daily briefings, generating data dashboards, and suggesting actions based on the user's professional data. This specialization allows the software to integrate more deeply into business operations without the overhead of managing personal life logistics.
Functionally, the system operates similarly to other advanced agents by performing tasks in the background. It utilizes its own virtual machine to work while the user continues with their day. If the agent encounters a step that requires specific input or approval, it will pause and return to the user for confirmation. This design aims to minimize interruption while ensuring that critical decisions remain under human control.
The timing of this release coincides with a broader industry shift away from basic chatbots toward autonomous agents. Many competitors are now targeting business use cases to capture a more stable user base. For instance, Meta has released a version of its Muse assistant tailored for small businesses with app connections, and OpenAI’s Dots focuses on integrating with professional tools. Claude Duet enters this crowded space by emphasizing its ability to proactively monitor ongoing tasks and deliver recommendations without constant prompting.
Under the hood, the application runs on the Claude Opus 5.5 model. It boasts significant connectivity, linking to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive network allows the agent to interact with a wide variety of external services. Furthermore, the system has the capability to make online purchases on behalf of the user, utilizing digital wallets such as Stripe’s Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay to facilitate transactions.
Security and financial controls are central to the new design. Anthropic states that sensitive steps, particularly payments, will always require explicit user approval before execution. To prevent overreach, the agent is restricted from trading securities or moving money between different accounts. Additionally, a new classifier has been introduced to scan every message, aiming to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the system is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification numbers.
The application is currently available for iOS and Android devices, as well as via the web on Claude.ai. Access is limited to Pro and Max customers who are participating in the research preview. To try the tool, users must currently join a waitlist, indicating that the platform is still in a phased rollout stage as Anthropic gathers feedback and refines its capabilities.
