Kylian Mbappe enters Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London with a distinct disadvantage and a record-breaking counterargument. While the prize carries no cash value, it significantly elevates a player’s market status. Mbappe is not the bookmakers’ favorite, and he did not lead every scoring table last season, yet he has aggressively promoted his individual achievements to sway the voters.

The 2025-26 campaign concluded without any trophies for Mbappe at either the club or international level. His strongest asset is his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He secured the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and claimed the title of all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. His total of 22 goals in 22 matches surpasses Lionel Messi’s 21 and Miroslav Klose’s 16. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month. When asked who he was voting for, he replied: "Myself."

His club statistics support this narrative. Mbappe finished as La Liga’s top scorer with 25 goals. He also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," the former PSG forward stated.

The primary weakness in his candidacy is the absence of silverware. Real Madrid experienced a turbulent season under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. The club finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marks a second straight season without a major title for the Madrid side. France also underperformed at the World Cup, finishing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.

Competitors have stronger trophy resumes. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. History suggests trophies are usually mandatory. Every Ballon d’Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG win the Champions League, while Rodri won Euro 2024 and the Premier League before his 2024 victory.

There is one historical precedent for a winner without a major trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season and ended Messi’s four-year winning streak. Mbappe’s manager, Jose Mourinho, has backed his player’s bid. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said. Mbappe has received nine previous nominations and placed third in 2023.

The award goes to a single player, not a team, a distinction Mbappe has emphasized. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told radio station RFI. He argued that individual performance and eye-catching moments are the key factors for voters. The ceremony takes place this Monday in London.
