The United Kingdom is bracing for severe weather this weekend following the passage of Storm Austen. Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the season, is approaching from the west with forecasts of heavy showers and strong winds.

Boelo is expected to impact the northern regions of the UK with winds potentially exceeding 80mph. The system moves in just as Storm Austen clears eastward after striking the south-west of England on Friday. The Met Office has issued an amber warning, its second-highest alert level, for Scotland and northern England down to Carlisle. This warning is active from 9pm Saturday through 9pm Sunday. A separate amber warning covers the north-east of Northern Ireland from 9pm Saturday to 10am Sunday.

Officials have urged residents to remain indoors due to the risk of life-threatening flying debris and crashing waves. A broader yellow warning for wet and windy conditions covers the entire north of the UK from midday Saturday to 9pm Sunday. Additional heavy rain warnings apply to Wales and parts of western and southern England from 11am to 11pm on Saturday.

Travel operators are preparing for widespread disruption on rail and ferry routes. TransPennine Express has advised passengers to avoid all but essential journeys on Saturday and Sunday. Avanti West Coast has strongly recommended that passengers avoid traveling north of Preston on Sunday. The Met Office has warned that the power outages seen in the south-west during the previous storm could be replicated in the northern amber warning areas.

During Friday's storm, 31,000 homes in the south-west lost electricity. By Saturday morning, more than 3,700 homes remained without power according to National Grid data. Meteorologist Alex Burkill identified the wind as the primary hazard for the incoming system. "They're really going to whip up some strong gusty winds across Northern Ireland, northern parts of England and also Scotland through the day," Burkill said, noting that conditions would intensify in the evening.

Temperatures are expected to sit slightly above the seasonal average, but the combination of wind and rain will make conditions feel "pretty unpleasant." Boelo's winds are set to peak from Saturday evening, with wet weather clearing overnight in many areas. Rain is expected to persist in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed the weather at a summit on summer wildfires on Friday. He warned that the UK could face a winter of increased flooding while noting that unexpected events are becoming more common. The country experienced its hottest summer on record this year, which included five heatwaves and a record 40 days above 30C.
