Arsenal and Manchester City are tied at the top of the Premier League table with 21 points each after eight matches. Arsenal achieved the tie by defeating Everton 2-0 in heavy rain at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The result erased a three-point gap created by Manchester City's first loss of the season.
The path to the tie began with Manchester City's 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for Villa, ending the visitors' unbeaten start. That result allowed Arsenal to take full advantage of their home match against Everton.
Arsenal opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Martin Odegaard's corner found Ezri Konsa, who bundled the ball in from a yard out after Jordan Pickford stopped the initial effort. The goal marked Arsenal's first set-piece winner in 13 games. Ben White and Gabriel combined for the second goal in the 68th minute. White crossed to the far post for Gabriel to head home on his 200th Premier League appearance.
At Villa Park, Unai Emery's side climbed to sixth place with 11 points. Villa secured their third consecutive league victory over Manchester City. Jackson put Villa ahead in the sixth minute following a mistake by Marc Guehi. Erling Haaland equalized for the visitors after halftime with a header from a free kick. Jackson then scored the winner on the hour mark, finishing low under Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Manchester City continues to face off-field scrutiny. An independent commission found the club committed 114 breaches of financial rules, a finding the club disputes while awaiting an appeal outcome. Jackson acknowledged the pressure by stating the team is working game by game.
Other results on Saturday affected the mid-table race. Tottenham Hotspur traveled to Stamford Bridge and beat Chelsea 2-0. It was Tottenham's second league win at that venue in 36 years. Mathys Tel sealed the result in the 87th minute after Cole Palmer was sent off. Fulham defeated Coventry City 1-0 with a late goal from Oscar Bobb.
Both leaders remain level on points as the league moves into Matchday nine. The next round of fixtures will determine if the tie persists or if one team extends its advantage.
