Ryleigh Schoonover is starting her college basketball career at Fresno State. She chose to stay local rather than leave the area for another program. This decision keeps her close to the community that shaped her playing style.
Schoonover comes from a program defined by long-term success. Clovis West girls basketball has won the Central Section championship for 14 consecutive years. That streak has made winning a core part of the team's identity. Coach Craig Campbell said the goal is to remain competitive every single season. He noted that while they may not win every title, the team always aims to be a strong contender.
Schoonover said wearing the Fresno State uniform holds a specific meaning for her. She described the valley V on her chest as something distinct that people outside the region often fail to understand. She credited Campbell for preparing her for the next level. She explained that the standards at both the high school and college levels are the same.
Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy praised Schoonover immediately upon her arrival. He stated in his opinion that she was the best player in the area for the class of 2026. McCarthy said she proved that assessment right away. He added that her background in a winning program means she arrives with the expectation to perform at a high level on the floor.
The Bulldogs are currently pursuing a Pac-12 championship. Schoonover is part of a talented freshman class that joins this effort. Her time in a championship-winning high school program has readied her for college expectations, according to McCarthy. He believes her experience with a team that consistently wins will serve her well in the college environment.
Schoonover is preparing for her first game in college. Fresno State will face UC Merced in their season opener. That game is less than two weeks away. She will play her first game at the Save Mart Center. Campbell believes Schoonover is still developing her potential. He said she is just scratching the surface of what she can do for the team.
