Lakers' Luka Doncic leads early MVP charge as injuries reshape NBA
With stars sidelined in Oklahoma City and Minnesota, the Los Angeles Lakers are surging behind a dominant scoring performance by their Slovenian guard.

Luka Doncic is making an early case for the league's most valuable player. The Los Angeles Lakers guard has led the NBA in scoring this season, averaging 38.3 points per game. His shooting splits stand at 49.7% from the field, 42.7% from three-point range, and 88.7% from the free-throw line.
Doncic’s production has translated into wins for his team. The Lakers are 6-2 in their first eight games. In his last two outings, he scored 42 and 45 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo, a teammate, suggested that Doncic might be establishing himself not just as the best active scorer, but as the best to ever put the ball in the basket.
The surge in Los Angeles comes as other contenders struggle with injury. The Oklahoma City Thunder have lost four All-Defensive players: Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Chet Holmgren, and Alex Caruso. These absences have hurt the team's offensive flow. In their last four games, the Thunder have averaged only 11.8 points off turnovers, a league-worst metric in that span.
Oklahoma City led the league in points off turnovers in each of the past three seasons. The shift in momentum has been sharp. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves are navigating the absence of Anthony Edwards, who underwent a knee procedure and is expected to sit out for two months.
The Timberwolves have mixed results without their franchise guard. They lost to the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs but defeated the Los Angeles Clippers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Ayo Dosunmu, who signed a five-year, $112 million contract this summer, is starting in Edwards' place.
In the East, the Philadelphia 76ers are 7-1. Tyrese Maxey has emerged as the team's best player, leading the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring with 11.0 points per game. Coach Nick Nurse noted that Maxey now feels confident in his abilities. "I just think he now feels, like in a nonarrogant and even a humble way, he knows he's really, really good," Nurse said.
The Houston Rockets, also 7-1, have stabilized with the return of Fred VanVleet. He sustained a season-ending knee injury before training camp last year. His presence has organized the offense, helping the Rockets post a 121.2 offensive rating, the best in the league. The team added Marcus Smart as insurance for VanVleet's rest days.
The Memphis Grizzlies are 6-1 after a major roster shakeup. General manager Zach Kleiman traded Ja Morant in June. The team is relying on young players like Cameron Boozer and Cedric Coward, along with Ty Jerome. Kleiman expressed conviction that this pivot to a younger build would not be a five-year process.
The Portland Trail Blazers are 5-1 despite losing Ja Morant to a strained hamstring after four games. Scoot Henderson has taken over the starting spot to help with perimeter defense. Jrue Holiday has thrived as a sixth man, while Deni Avdija and Damian Lillard kept the offense humming in a recent win over Denver.
Next, the Lakers play at Phoenix on November 4. The Thunder host the Timberwolves on the same day. The Rockets face the Pistons, and the Sixers play the Celtics. The Grizzlies host the Indiana Pacers, and the Warriors face the Phoenix Suns away from home.
