Miami (FL) opened the College Football Playoff rankings at No. 1 on Tuesday night, edging out No. 2 Georgia to lead the field in the first official standings of the season. The Hurricanes enter the final month of the regular season with an 8-0 record, having defeated Wake Forest as their only ranked victory to date. Their next challenge arrives on Nov. 7 when they travel to face No. 11 Notre Dame.
Georgia, Utah, Indiana, and Alabama round out the top five positions. The Southeastern Conference dominates the upper tier, securing 10 of the top 25 spots in the initial release. This concentration of power reflects the strength of record and conference metrics that the selection committee prioritized in its first deliberation of the year.
Committee chair Hunter Yurachek addressed the placement of Notre Dame at No. 11, noting the team's lack of a signature win over a ranked opponent. He cited the Fighting Irish' loss at BYU and their neutral-site victory over Wisconsin as factors keeping them out of the top 10 despite a 7-1 record. Yurachek stated that the committee was impressed by Notre Dame's performance on both sides of the ball but noted the resume gap.
The expanded 12-team format, now in its third year, provides automatic bids to the five highest-ranked conference champions. If the bracket were selected today, Boise State would occupy the final slot as the only team ranked No. 25. The committee also clarified why Alabama sits at No. 5 while Tennessee is at No. 13, explaining that the teams were not in the same comparison pod, so Tennessee's 26-10 win over Alabama did not directly factor into the current seeding.
Big 12 teams hold three positions in the top 15, with Utah at No. 3 and BYU at No. 9. Texas Tech sits at No. 15, just outside the top 10. A matchup between Utah and BYU in Salt Lake City on Saturday could shift the standings significantly next week. Utah’s victory over Houston on Oct. 24 remains its only win against a top 25 opponent, a statistic that distinguishes it from several other teams in the top 15.
The committee’s rankings establish a baseline for the final four weeks of the season. Teams currently ranked between No. 19 and No. 25, including USC, Oregon, and Florida, face a steep climb to secure at-large berths, as no team from that range has advanced to the final bracket in the previous two seasons. South Carolina, currently No. 21, seeks to extend its winning streak to gain leverage in the selection process.
