The College Football Playoff selection committee begins its first ranking of the season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. The group must determine the top 12 teams after a Week 9 that left many contenders with multiple losses. The 13 members, which include athletic directors and former players, will deliberate from Monday until Tuesday lunch. Their goal is to select the best teams and assign them to the bracket. This year presents a difficult task because the depth of the field has blurred the lines between top-tier programs and those chasing spots.

Miami enters the ranking as the projected No. 1 seed. The Hurricanes are 8-0 and feature two Heisman candidates in quarterback Darian Mensah and receiver Malachi Toney. Their resume includes four road wins in the ACC and strong statistical metrics. Despite a schedule strength ranked 60th, their performance on the field suggests they are the clear choice. Miami’s next test comes on Nov. 7 at Notre Dame, which is likely their final ranked opponent of the regular season.

Georgia sits in the second spot despite a 7-1 record. The Bulldogs lost at home to Auburn on Oct. 17, a result that may lower their standing. However, they have won away games against Alabama and Florida. Their offense averages 41 points per game while holding opponents to 14.9. Quarterback Gunner Stockton has a 86.2 QBR. The committee will weigh their dominant wins against a weak schedule strength, which was the worst in the SEC before Saturday. Georgia plays at Ole Miss on Nov. 7.

BYU is projected at No. 3, relying on their head-to-head victory over Notre Dame. The Cougars are 7-1 but suffered a double-overtime loss at UCF in Week 8. Their schedule strength ranks in the top 10, which helps offset that defeat. BYU averages 32 points per game and allows 18.8. They face a critical test on Nov. 7 at Utah. A win would secure their position, while a loss would force the committee to compare them against other two-loss teams. BYU can lock up the Big 12 title and a playoff spot with consistent play.

Notre Dame is the projected No. 4 team. The Fighting Irish are 7-1 and benefit from a top-three ranking in offensive and defensive efficiency. Their loss to BYU on Oct. 17 is the primary factor keeping them below the Cougars. Notre Dame’s schedule strength has declined, particularly after Wisconsin’s 30-0 loss to Iowa. They play Miami on Nov. 7. A win there would keep them safe, but a second loss would make their playoff status uncertain. The committee must decide if the Irish are good enough to override the head-to-head loss to BYU.

Utah holds the No. 5 spot with an 8-0 record. The Utes beat Cincinnati 42-6 at halftime in a game that resolved early struggles against Colorado and Houston. They are among the most explosive teams in the country with 46 plays of at least 20 yards. Their schedule is one of the easiest among contenders. Utah plays BYU on Nov. 7. The outcome of that rivalry game could determine whether both teams make the playoff as the Big 12 champion and runner-up. Indiana is projected at No. 6, holding opponents to 12.4 points per game despite a close loss to Ohio State.
