Minnesota fans inside 3M Arena at Mariucci watched their team fall behind three times before securing a 4-3 victory over Penn State on Saturday night. The 18th-ranked Golden Gophers won the Big Ten Conference series finale after LJ Mooney scored 17 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime period. The result extends Minnesota's season record to 3-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
The Gophers did not hold the lead at any point during regulation. Penn State took a 1-0 advantage just 81 seconds into the game following a 2-on-1 rush. The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 2-1 with 5:11 left in the first period after a tipped shot from the point. Minnesota tied the game at 2-2 with 3:25 remaining in the opening 20 minutes when Christian Humphreys scored on a pass from Tanner Ludtke.
Penn State regained the lead early in the second period, moving ahead 3-2 on a long rebound at the 3:25 mark. Humphreys restored parity less than four minutes later. He received a pass from Axel Löfgren in the slot and buried the puck for his second goal of the night. Ludtke finished the game with a career-high three points, including a goal at 5:03 of the first period assisted by Tate Pritchard.
Both teams entered a fifth straight overtime session, having done the same on Friday. A five-minute major penalty assessed to Penn State late in the second period gave Minnesota a power play that carried into the third. The Gophers failed to capitalize, and the teams left the ice with the score tied at 3-3. Jacob Kvasnicka and Finn Loftus each had shots saved or blocked in the final minutes of regulation.
The deciding moment came immediately after the overtime faceoff. Tanner Henricks controlled the puck and moved it up the ice before passing back to Mooney at the Minnesota blue line. Mooney skated through the visiting defense and lifted a backhand shot past the Penn State goalie. The win leaves Penn State with a 2-5-1 record and a 0-1-1 mark in the Big Ten.
The game marked the second straight night the teams played into an extra session. Friday's contest ended with one goal per side. Saturday's first period alone produced four goals, double the total from the previous night's entire game. The Gophers will look to maintain their conference standing after the series finale.
