Kimi Antonelli secured the Formula 1 world championship on Sunday at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver finished in third place behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. This result gave him an unassailable lead in the standings with four races remaining in the season.

Antonelli became the youngest driver to win the title in the sport's history. He surpassed the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won the championship at age 23 in 2010. Antonelli is also the first Italian to claim the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

The race featured a dramatic stoppage on lap 46 when Valtteri Bottas crashed into the wall at the first corner. The incident was caused by issues with the driver's right-side suspension. A red flag halted the event, and Cadillac reported that Bottas underwent further medical assessments as a precaution. The driver exited the car unaided and waved to the crowd before leaving the track.

Max Verstappen took the victory in Mexico City, marking his sixth win at that venue. Charles Leclerc finished second, followed by Antonelli in third, Lewis Hamilton in fourth, Lando Norris in fifth, and George Russell in sixth. Verstappen maintained his position at the front after the restart and did not relinquish the lead.

Hamilton expressed frustration regarding a five-second penalty imposed on his Ferrari teammate, Leclerc. The penalty resulted from a maneuver between the two drivers on the fourth lap. Hamilton lost pole position during that exchange and briefly went off track, dropping to third place before recovering to fourth.

"The stewards are basically handing Charles this win," Hamilton said. "We agreed in the drivers' briefing. The problem with a 5-second penalty is that he's got clean air and doesn't have to manage the car like the rest of us. He should have just given the position back."

Stefano Domenicali, the chief executive of Formula 1, described the moment as a pinnacle for the sport. "For 73 years, our country has waited for this moment, and today an entire nation will celebrate one of its own reaching the very pinnacle of our sport," Domenicali stated. He added that Antonelli's name joins the legends of the sport and that a new chapter in Formula 1 history has been written.

Aston Martin faced its own difficulties during the event. Fernando Alonso retired early due to an engine issue. His teammate Lance Stroll exited the race shortly afterward on the seventh lap. Alonso noted that the car had reliability issues during the worst possible time, having failed in both qualifying and the race. Following Mexico, the schedule moves to Brazil and Las Vegas, with the final two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi potentially affected by regional instability.
