Saquon Barkley is active for the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, clearing the final hurdle before facing the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. The 2024 Offensive Player of the Year returns to the field after missing time due to a hamstring pull, marking a significant shift for a team currently grappling with injuries at multiple positions.

Barkley has seen limited action this season, playing fewer than 16 percent of offensive snaps in half of his appearances. He sustained a stinger during Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans and pulled his hamstring in the first quarter of the Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. In his four games played, he has rushed for 182 yards without a touchdown, averaging 5.1 yards per carry on 36 attempts.

The Eagles face a tough offensive environment without quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is expected to miss the rest of the season after blood clots were found in his lungs. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith is also out with a hamstring injury. Without Barkley, the rest of the running back corps has averaged 2.8 yards per rush on 71 attempts. Last week against the Carolina Panthers, Dameon Pierce carried the ball just 12 times for 35 yards and a score.

The offense has faced mounting pressure, averaging fewer than 4.0 yards per play over three consecutive games. This marks the first time since 1999 that the Eagles have dropped below that threshold for three straight weeks. The team has been out-gained by 108.3 total yards per game this season, a figure that ranks last in the National Football League.

Historical trends offer some context for the upcoming matchup. Philadelphia has won four straight home games against the Cowboys, a streak tied for the second-longest in team history. The Eagles have also won seven of their last eight prime time games at home. The return of Barkley to the starting lineup provides a potential spark for an offense that has struggled to maintain consistency against physical defenses.

Barkley’s status progressed quickly this week. He was listed as questionable before the game but worked as a limited participant in Thursday and Friday practices. By Saturday, he had moved to full participation, signaling his readiness for the physical demands of a divisional rivalry game.
