President Donald Trump will hold a speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on Monday afternoon. The White House formally confirmed the event on Sunday, ending speculation about the president's final major public appearance before the midterms.
Trump first hinted at the venue while deplaning from Air Force One for a rally in Iowa on Sunday. He told reporters he wanted to use the site to show how beautiful it is. Although he initially suggested the event might happen the next day, officials later locked in Monday as the date.
Aides described the address as a closing argument for the midterm elections. Trump is expected to link his political message to his administration's physical improvements in the capital, specifically touting the renovation projects and the reopening of the reflecting pool.
This strategy represents a shift from the past month. Trump has spent the last four weeks traveling to more than 25 rallies in predominantly conservative areas. Those events were designed to build momentum for the Republican Party amid low approval ratings for the president.
Polls cited by the Associated Press suggest Democrats could perform well on election night due to the Iran war, high energy prices, and rising costs of living. The Lincoln Memorial speech offers one of the last chances for Trump to reach prospective voters directly.
The event is scheduled for Monday afternoon. It follows a series of stops where Trump focused on energizing his base in key states ahead of the vote.
