Former President Barack Obama characterized Canada as a well-known evil empire while attacking the current administration's trade policy at a campaign event in Cleveland, Ohio. The speech took place on Saturday, a day after President Donald Trump announced plans to remove tariffs on certain Canadian products.

Obama addressed a crowd of supporters for Democratic midterm candidates, using humor to frame the bilateral relationship. He noted that the current trade conflict is with Canada, a nation he described as the source of maple syrup and the comedian Martin Short. He added that Canadians are the nicest people and friendly neighbors to the north.

The former president questioned the strategic rationale for picking a fight with such an ally. He argued that the tariffs have produced the negative outcomes many predicted, with American consumers absorbing the increased costs. These rising prices have impacted political dynamics, particularly in border states where Republican candidates face challenges.

The trade dispute has been ongoing since Trump launched a levy campaign last year. The initial measures were justified by officials as responses to alleged fentanyl trafficking and trade imbalances. Negotiations between the two governments collapsed in August, leading to a series of retaliatory tariffs.

Despite the recent announcement regarding tariff relief, Canadian officials remain cautious. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told CBC's Power & Politics program that Ottawa does not anticipate a finalized deal before the November 3 vote. He indicated that the lifting of some tariffs is a positive signal but not a complete resolution of the conflict.

President Trump has also targeted Canada in his own recent campaign appearances. Speaking in Highland Heights, Kentucky, on October 17, he expressed confidence in reaching an amazing deal soon. He cited years of lost billions and stated that the Canadians felt emboldened. The audience reacted positively when he referred to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a loser.

Trump also addressed the current Prime Minister, Mark Carney, noting that while he is a nice guy, he is not nice when it comes to trade. He concluded that the Canadians are learning and suffering from the current economic measures.
