The Bureau of Meteorology issued nine flood warnings for southern Queensland after the region recorded rainfall totals as high as 450mm over the past seven days.

Senior meteorologist David Crock noted that the current atmospheric conditions resemble typical January or February weather patterns rather than the usual conditions for October. This persistent moisture flow has drawn large amounts of water into Queensland and northern New South Wales over a period of seven to 10 days.

The heaviest precipitation occurred on Thursday. Torrential rain fell from Caboolture south to the Border Ranges, with some locations receiving more than 200mm in a single day. The intensity of the downpour triggered flash flooding and prompted hundreds of calls for assistance to the State Emergency Service. Several schools in the affected areas closed on Friday to ensure student safety.

Emergency services responded to the flooding with numerous interventions. The Queensland fire department conducted more than 16 swift-water rescues. In one specific incident, crews used a raft to reach an elderly man who was holding onto the roof of his vehicle in Caboolture.

The storm system is expected to move southward this weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flash flooding in South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania. A cold front will cross New South Wales on Sunday, bringing severe storms to the western part of the state, north-eastern Victoria, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Crock stated that the threat of thunderstorms will extend across eastern Australia. Severe storms are likely to affect a wide area of inland eastern Australia, including central and eastern South Australia and parts of Victoria. In Tasmania, heavy rain is expected to develop overnight into Sunday morning.

Specific locations in central and eastern Queensland are also in the forecast for Saturday. These include Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast hinterlands, and Roma. The Sunshine Coast hinterlands and Caboolture have already recorded seven-day rainfall totals between 300mm and 400mm, with some areas reaching the 450mm mark.
