BYD's New Flagship Sedan Targets A $300,000 Price Tag

The automaker is preparing to launch an ultra-luxury electric sedan in the UAE that aims to rival established premium brands.

BYD is set to launch its most ambitious electric sedan yet, with a rumored starting price of 2 million yuan, or about $300,000. The global debut for this new ultra-luxury model is scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates, marking a strategic step outside the company's home market. While a specific launch date has not been provided, the vehicle is expected to make its official debut this month. This move signals a significant push into a market segment traditionally dominated by established luxury automakers.

The new sedan is being positioned to compete directly with ultra-luxury marques like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Mercedes-Maybach. This represents a major shift for BYD, a company widely known for producing affordable and accessible electric vehicles, including the Seagull hatchback, which is priced under $10,000 in China. The company has rapidly expanded its product range in recent years, now offering everything from entry-level EVs to electric supercars. Its corporate structure includes several sub-brands, with Yangwang serving as the top-tier luxury division and a showcase for its most advanced technologies.

The vehicle is designed to be the largest and most luxurious sedan in BYD's portfolio, with a physical footprint comparable to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Images released by Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing show the car undergoing testing, though it was heavily disguised. Local reports have estimated its length at approximately 5,500 mm (216 inches). Yangwang's executive general manager, Zheng Yu, has stated that the sedan will feature "unprecedented disruptive technology," though specific details on this claim remain unconfirmed.

Some technical details can be inferred from the information available. The sedan was pictured at a BYD Flash Charging station, which suggests it will support megawatt-level charging capabilities. The vehicle is also equipped with rear-hinged coach doors, a first for BYD. Furthermore, reports indicate it will be the first model to utilize the company's solid-state batteries. This aligns with a statement from BYD executive vice president Stella Li, who said last month that the company's first solid-state battery vehicle would debut in 2027.

If the rumored pricing holds, the new model would be BYD's most expensive vehicle by a wide margin. It would sit far above the current top of the Yangwang lineup, which includes the U7 electric sedan starting at 658,000 yuan ($98,000), the U8 and U8L plug-in hybrid luxury off-road SUVs, and the U9 electric super-coupe. The extended U8L is currently the brand's highest-priced mass-produced vehicle, with a starting price of 1.45 million yuan ($217,000). The final cost and a firm launch date for the new sedan remain open questions.
