The sentencing hearing for Larry Millete was interrupted when his father, Benito Millete, required immediate medical attention. Benito Millete, who has a pacemaker, was removed from the courtroom on a stretcher after stating he needed medical assistance. The incident occurred shortly after prosecutors objected to his statement.

The hearing became a highly emotional event as members of both families addressed the court. Maya Millete’s relatives spoke first, delivering emotional statements about the impact of her disappearance. Following these remarks, Larry Millete’s attorney requested time for his client’s family to speak in his support. His mother, father, and aunt each took the floor to address the judge.

Larry Millete also spoke directly to the court. He described himself as a decent and good husband, though he admitted he was not the best. "I'm not a monster. I'm not a bad person," Millete told the judge.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan pushed back against Millete’s comments. She argued that his remarks lacked remorse and failed to address the primary concern of Maya’s family: the location of her remains. Stephan noted that Millete said nothing about bringing Maya home or allowing his children to have their mother’s remains.

After the sentencing, law enforcement officials, attorneys, and members of Maya’s family held a news conference. They reflected on the five years of work dedicated to the case. Maricris Drouaillet, Maya’s sister, thanked ABC 10 News reporter Laura Acevedo for helping her prepare for her first media interview after her sister disappeared.

"You walked me through the interview. I've never been in front of a camera, and that helped me a lot," Drouaillet said. Dan Peake, Acting Chief of Police for the Chula Vista Police Department, stated that the department remains committed to continuing the search. Maya Millete’s remains have not been recovered.

The search for Maya Millete’s remains continues. Authorities said their work is not over despite the conclusion of the sentencing phase. The Chula Vista Police Department aims to provide the family with the closure they seek.
