Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Arrested for DUI
Michael Giles Jr. was pulled over near E-470 after a deputy reported erratic driving.

A deputy stopped a 51-year-old school superintendent at 12:30 a.m. on October 31 for swerving across lanes and running a red light. The driver was Michael Giles Jr., the head of Aurora Public Schools.
Sheriff officials in Arapahoe County said the incident occurred near E-470 and East Quincy Avenue, southeast of Aurora. After the traffic stop, the deputy administered a roadside sobriety test. The results led to Giles' arrest for driving under the influence.
District officials confirmed they were aware of the early Saturday arrest. Benjamin Hartford, the superintendent's attorney, released a statement on behalf of his client. Hartford said Giles understands the seriousness of the situation and recognizes the concerns the news may raise within the school community.
Hartford stated that Giles is treating the matter with responsibility and respect. Because the legal case is pending, neither Giles nor his counsel will comment on the specific allegations or circumstances of the arrest. The attorney asked that the legal process be allowed to proceed before the public draws conclusions.
Court records indicate Giles appeared in county court on Monday, November 2. His next court date is set for December 15.
Giles took the role of superintendent in April 2023. Prior to that appointment, he spent more than two decades in the Cherry Creek school district, where he rose to top administrative ranks as an educator.
