Disney+ will add 3 percent of its subscribers who are aged 4 to 15 to the Channel 4 audience base starting in early 2027. That statistic from BARB, a U.K. measurement firm, highlights the age gap between the two platforms and serves as the core demographic rationale for the new partnership. Disney+ currently reaches 17 percent of its users in that young age bracket, whereas Channel 4 reaches only 3 percent. The integration aims to place public service programming directly in front of younger viewers who already use the streaming service.
The agreement, described by both companies as a first of its kind, brings Channel 4’s main linear HD channel and its on-demand catalogue to Disney+ for subscribers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The service will launch in early 2027. Customers will access the content through a dedicated Channel 4-branded section within the Disney+ interface. The navigation and user experience will mirror the rest of the platform. No additional fee will be charged to existing subscribers.
This deal follows a series of similar content agreements Disney+ has struck with major European broadcasters. Previous partnerships include ITV in the U.K., Italy’s RAI, Germany’s ARD and ZDF, Portugal’s SIC, and Spain’s RTVE and Atresmedia. Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, stated that these local partnerships are driving subscriber growth. He noted that Disney+ subscriber counts in the region rose by 30 percent over the last 18 months. He attributed this increase partly to the inclusion of local originals and content from free-to-air partners.
Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra said the company is transforming to meet changing viewer habits. She explained that audiences now use multiple platforms to find content. The deal allows Channel 4 to reach viewers who may not tune into its traditional channels. Dogra emphasized that the partnership does not replace Channel 4’s owned and operated services. The main channel and streaming service will remain the primary homes for the majority of its programming. This new channel is an additional avenue for discovery.
The on-demand library will feature hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted content. Specific titles mentioned in the announcement include Big Mood, Tip Toe, and 24 Hours in A&E. The partners also identified new shows that will be available day and date on both platforms. These include the drama Maya, starring Bella Ramsey, the comedy Stepping Up with Denise Welch, and the reality format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed.
Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro has positioned Disney+ as the digital centerpiece of the company’s streaming strategy. Adam Smith, chairman of direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment, said local broadcaster partnerships are essential for building content libraries. He noted that Channel 4 has produced shows with strong appeal in the U.K. and Ireland. Smith stated that the deal pairs high-quality local programming with a complementary audience on Disney+.
Both executives indicated that the partnership is expected to expand over time. Dogra noted that Channel 4 already licenses Disney programming, including The Simpsons, This Is Us, and Disney films like The Avengers. She said her team and Holmes would continue to discuss further opportunities. Holmes described the current deal as the culmination of lessons learned from recent European partnerships. He added that the team will continue to refine how they present these shows on the platform in the coming months.
