Helen Haines, an independent member of parliament, was upgraded to serious but stable condition on Saturday morning. The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne provided the update five days after she was struck by a vehicle. It marks the first improvement in her status since she was airlifted to the facility following the Monday incident.

The attack occurred outside Haines' electorate office in Wangaratta. Police describe the event as a deliberate strike. Both of her legs were amputated due to the injuries sustained. Haines is 65 years old and has served in parliament since 2019, where she previously worked as a nurse and midwife.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the crash. He appears in court facing three charges. These include dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Prosecutors may add further counts, including attempted murder. Nugent's lawyer told the court his client has mental health concerns but did not provide specifics.

Phil Haines, the MP's husband, described the event as a horrendous incident on Wednesday. He noted that while physical injuries were severe, his wife's heart and mind were in good shape. The family of the accused stated they had been long-time friends of Haines.

Victoria Police, supported by the Australian Federal Police, continue their investigation. No motive has been established yet. Investigators are reviewing whether drug use or medication played a part in the driver's actions. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently told ABC television that Australia has seen a rise in temperature, citing too much shouting and not enough discourse.

The investigation remains active as authorities seek to determine the exact circumstances of the crash. The legal process for Nugent is ongoing in local courts. Haines continues to receive care at the Alfred Hospital.
