Approximately 30 bicyclists participated in a memorial ride on the evening of Oct. 28 through a Riverside neighborhood. The group gathered to honor two local residents killed days earlier in a collision in neighboring Montclair.

The crash occurred on the night of Oct. 24 at the intersection of Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue. Montclair police reported that a vehicle traveling west struck a group of about 30 cyclists riding east on Kingsley Street. The impact resulted in the deaths of Robert Garcia Umanzor, 25, of Pomona, and Rumor Ortiz, 30.

Coroners in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties confirmed the deaths this week. Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, a 38-year-old Montclair resident, was arrested on Oct. 25. Police charged him with driving under the influence, causing injury or death, felony hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The memorial ride began at Myra Lynn Park. Participants pedaled through the streets to pay tribute to the two riders. A street-side memorial had also been established with candles, balloons, and signs following the deaths.

Family members have turned to online fundraising platforms to cover funeral costs. A GoFundMe page for Ortiz’s funeral has nearly reached its $9,000 goal. Another account has been created for Garcia-Umanzor’s final expenses.

A post on Ortiz’s fundraising page noted that she found her passion in cycling and experienced many great memories and friends.
