Duke Secures Top 2027 Recruiting Spot
Asa Montgomery’s commitment places the Blue Devils ahead of LSU and UConn, marking a fourth consecutive year of elite recruiting success under Jon Scheyer.

Asa Montgomery, a four-star forward from Power Springs, Georgia, committed to Duke on Wednesday, moving the Blue Devils to the top of the 247Sports 2027 team recruiting rankings. This achievement places Duke ahead of LSU, Indiana, Missouri, UConn, and Houston for the current cycle.
Montgomery is ranked No. 14 overall in the 2027 class by 247Sports and holds the No. 4 spot among small forwards. He selected Duke after taking official visits to five finalists, with the Blue Devils hosting the final visit over the October 2-3 weekend. The other programs in the mix included LSU, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and UConn.
The 6-foot-7 forward becomes the third player in Duke's 2027 class, joining Luke Paul from Australia and Kager Knueppel. Knueppel is the younger brother of Kon Knueppel, a former Duke player now with the Charlotte Hornets. This addition continues a trend under head coach Jon Scheyer, who has secured a top-two recruiting class in every year since taking over before the 2022-23 season.
Adam Finkelstein, director of scouting at 247Sports, cited Montgomery's defensive instincts and ball awareness as key attributes. Finkelstein noted that the forward demonstrated strong rebounding and switchability during FIBA competition, often securing loose balls against opposing forwards. He also pointed to Montgomery's ability to manage the minor details required for immediate collegiate impact.
Finkelstein emphasized that Montgomery is young for his grade and will not turn 18 until July following his senior year. This timeline provides a long window to develop the scoring and skill sets associated with grassroots basketball, potentially transforming him into a versatile two-way threat. The prospect is ineligible for the 2027 NBA Draft due to age requirements, necessitating two seasons of college play before he can enter the draft.
Montgomery will likely reunite with a former teammate upon arriving in Durham. The two played together on the USA Basketball Men's U17 National Team, which defeated Serbia earlier this summer. That squad also included Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, a current Duke freshman.
