A British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a current took hold of her two sons during a family snorkeling outing.
The Royal Bahamas police force said the woman, 36, was snorkeling with her husband and their two boys near the southern point of North Bimini when a strong current pulled both children away. Police said that as she moved to reach them, "the woman was also swept away." The boys were later pulled from the water.
Police said officers at the Alice Town station were alerted shortly after 10am that a woman lay unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time officers arrived, she had already been taken to the local clinic. A doctor there pronounced her dead despite attempts to revive her. Police said she was brought to the ferry dock from the water and that CPR was administered there. "Foul play is not suspected at this time," the force said.
An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it is aware of the case, with a spokesperson saying, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." Officials are in contact with local authorities and supporting her family.
Bimini sits between Andros, the largest landmass in the Bahamas, and Miami, making it the closest point in the country to the US mainland.
