Barbara Barrie, an actress nominated for an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony Award, has died at 95. She passed away Wednesday in Manhattan.

Her daughter confirmed the death to the New York Times and said it was medically assisted after Barrie received a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Barrie's career on the stage lasted more than 60 years. She made her Broadway debut in 1955 in "The Wooden Dish" and worked on Broadway and off Broadway until her final appearance in "Significant Other." Her credits included "The Crucible" in 1958, "California Suite" in 1976, and productions of both "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "The Taming of the Shrew" from 1958 to 1959.

She is perhaps best remembered on stage as a member of the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim's acclaimed musical "Company," which opened in the 1970s. Her performance as Sarah earned her a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical.

In film, Barrie debuted in "Giant" in 1956. She later starred in "One Potato, Two Potato" in 1964, a role that won her the best actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1979 she appeared in "Breaking Away," which received five Oscar nominations, and her own performance earned a nomination for best supporting actress.

Television audiences saw her in a long list of series, including "The Defenders," "Naked City," "Twilight Zone," "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," "Barney Miller" and "Suddenly Susan." She received Emmy nominations for the TV adaptation of "Breaking Away" and for guest appearances on "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: SVU."

Born in Chicago on May 23, 1931, Barrie grew up in Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1952 with a major in drama.

In the early 1990s, Barrie was diagnosed with rectal cancer. Hoping to reduce the stigma around the illness, she wrote two books about her experience: "Second Act" in 1997 and "Don't Die of Embarrassment" in 1999. In 2014, she announced that she had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a degenerative disease.

Barrie is survived by her daughter, her son Aaron Harnick, and three granddaughters. Her husband, Jay Harnick, died in 2007.
