Anthropic's $965 Billion Valuation Creates Multi-Billion Dollar Windfalls for Early Backers

Key investors in the AI firm are holding stakes worth billions at the latest private market price, with potential for further gains ahead of a public listing.

The private market valuation of Anthropic has climbed to $965 billion, a figure that places the stakes held by its venture capital backers in the multi-billion dollar range. This latest valuation sets the stage for a potential public listing expected later in 2026, which could push the company’s worth to as much as $2 trillion. Even before the IPO, the financial positions of early and later-stage investors have been significantly altered by the rapid appreciation in the AI lab’s equity.

Eric Schmidt, the former Google chief executive, represents one of the most substantial early gains. He invested in the company’s Series A round in 2021, a time when the startup was valued at just $461 million. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private market price, his stake is valued at nearly $10 billion, reflecting a massive return on his initial investment.

Later-stage investors have also seen significant growth in their holdings. Iconiq, an investment firm that wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year, holds a position now worth $17 billion. This investment was made when the company was already valued at $183 billion. Analysts suggest that this stake has the potential to double in value once the company completes its initial public offering, further cementing Iconiq’s status as a major beneficiary of the AI boom.

Other prominent venture firms have also capitalized on the company’s growth. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion in total. This stake is currently valued at $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia entered the landscape earlier this year, investing $3 billion when Anthropic was valued at $380 billion. This move secured them roughly 1% ownership, effectively doubling their investment almost immediately upon entry.

Smaller early bets have seen exponential returns as well. Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the valuation stood at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a value of $7 billion. Additionally, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested an initial $35 million in that same 2023 round. They subsequently added another $400 million, resulting in a stake worth billions today, although Kutcher has since left the firm to launch a new venture capital entity.

These valuations underscore the rapid wealth generation occurring within the artificial intelligence sector. As the company moves toward a public listing, the disparity between early entry prices and current market values highlights the high stakes involved in backing leading AI labs. For Southwest readers and investors tracking the tech landscape, Anthropic’s trajectory serves as a benchmark for how quickly private equity in this sector can appreciate in value before a formal market debut.
