A high-speed train collision in Toledo, Spain, killed at least 68 people on the morning of October 28. The crash involved a Renfe AVE train and a stopped Iryo train. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred minutes before 9 a.m. in the Urda area.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente Santiago said the AVE struck the Iryo from behind. He attributed the cause to a computer failure in the automated LZB safety system. Puente noted that the AVE received an order to resume movement in a manner he described as inexplicable. He implied human error may have played a role in the sequence of events.
Alejandro Sanz, the Madrid-born singer, reacted to the news from Mexico. He was in the middle of a tour when he woke up to the reports. Sanz posted on Instagram that his heart shrank all at once. He called the crash a catastrophe that left him without words or air. He sent his love and support to the victims, the injured, and the families affected by the tragedy.
Sanz also addressed the rescue and emergency teams working at the scene. He said they are giving their all without rest. He concluded his message by saying his heart is with them. Other public figures, including Paty Manterola, Pablo Alborán, Aitana, Ana Mena, Ibai Llanos, and María Pombo, also shared messages of solidarity. Aitana asked the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
Emiliano García-Page, the president of Castilla-La Mancha, said it is not ruled out that more bodies will be found under the derailed carriages. Investigators are currently working to determine exactly what happened and to assign responsibility. The search for survivors and victims continues at the crash site.
Presenter Eva González confirmed she was safe and expressed her sadness over the event. In the sports world, footballer Marcos Llorente criticized the management of railway safety. He demanded accountability from the authorities. The investigation into the Toledo train crash is ongoing.
