The Kehlsteinhaus, a stone structure perched on the Obersalzberg peak in the Bavarian Alps, no longer stands. The building, completed in 1938 as a retreat for Adolf Hitler, was completely destroyed by a fire that began on Friday night. Upper Bavaria South police confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the blaze.

Emergency services received the initial alert at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time. Firefighters arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames. Authorities stated that no people were found inside and no injuries were reported. Crews reported difficulties moving fire trucks to the site due to the local terrain and conditions.

Investigators focused on a single individual shortly after the fire started. Prosecutors identified the suspect as a 33-year-old German citizen with connections to the Berchtesgaden area, though he does not currently reside there. Police noted that the suspect showed signs of mental illness and has been sent to a psychiatric facility. Prosecutors said they are also examining whether a political motive played a role, given the building's history. No other individuals are currently suspected of involvement.

The site sits at an elevation of 6,017 feet. It escaped Allied bombing during World War II, leaving it largely in its original state for decades. The building has since operated as a restaurant and beer garden, attracting tourists who view it as a preserved monument to the era. The site's website describes it as standing for the insanity of the regime.

Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, addressed reporters in Berchtesgaden to announce the state's response. He stated that the Eagle's Nest will be rebuilt. Herrmann said the future design of the site would be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. He emphasized that authorities are not planning to leave a ruin on the mountain.

Herrmann expressed confidence in finding a sensible solution for the reconstruction. He also stressed the importance of continuing the work of remembrance at the site. The criminal investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.

The building's destruction marks the first time the structure has been lost since its completion in 1938. The site had been a popular destination for visitors for years. The arrest of the 33-year-old suspect provides investigators with a focal point as they determine the exact cause of the blaze.
