For residents of the Karak governorate, the usual rhythm of community life was shattered on Friday when an armed group targeted a place of worship. The incident has immediate consequences for the local population, as it marks a significant disruption to the safety of a region known for its religious diversity. Ordinary people in the area are now navigating a heightened state of alert as security forces work to secure the streets and identify the individuals behind the violence.
The attack occurred in the village of Hammoud, located approximately 110 miles south of the capital, Amman. According to official reports, at least seven people lost their lives in the shooting. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed these figures during a press conference and noted that 34 additional individuals sustained injuries. The minister attributed the violence to a group of extremists, a description that underscores the nature of the threat faced by the local community.
The sequence of events was captured by state television footage, which provided a clear visual of the assault. The video showed two men in casual clothing holding pistols while a third individual carried a long gun. The assailants emerged from a vehicle and began firing from a street-level entrance before moving deeper into the church compound. An eyewitness described the attackers as firing continuously for about five minutes before fleeing the scene. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present in and around the church at the time, many of whom were elderly, with most victims reportedly between the ages of 50 and 70.
Local and national leaders have responded swiftly to the incident. King Abdullah II expressed his determination to hold the perpetrators accountable, stating that he would deliver the harshest retaliation. He emphasized on social media that every Jordanian life is valuable and that the nation would strike with an iron fist against those who threaten its stability. This strong public stance aims to reassure citizens and signal that the state is taking the threat seriously.
The attack has also drawn attention from regional figures. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who is the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the event as a heinous terrorist attack. In a statement, he noted that the violence reaffirms that terrorism has no specific religion or homeland and aims to disrupt coexistence and spread strife. This international reaction highlights the broader implications of the attack for Christian communities across the region.
The Karak area has a history of violent incidents, which adds context to the current manhunt. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in the same region, including at a popular Crusader castle site. That previous attack resulted in ten deaths, seven of whom were officers, and left dozens wounded. Security forces eventually resolved that standoff by killing the attackers. The recurrence of violence in this specific locale has prompted a renewed and intensive search for the current suspects, who remain at large.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on securing the safety of the community and bringing the perpetrators to justice. The public security directorate has confirmed that a manhunt is underway, and security forces are actively gathering evidence to understand the full scope of the incident. For now, the residents of Hammoud and the wider Karak governorate are waiting for clarity while navigating the aftermath of a rare and tragic event in the majority Sunni Muslim kingdom.
