iPhone Duo's 5.4-inch screen loses usable space to a mandatory sidebar
Apple's new foldable reserves a large portion of its small display for a dock, a design choice that contrasts with the open layout of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The 5.4-inch display on the new Apple iPhone Duo features a dedicated sidebar that occupies a large section of the screen, leaving a significant portion of the panel unused for primary content. This layout decision stands in contrast to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, which utilizes the entire width of its outer display for applications.
Allison Johnson of The Verge provided early impressions of the device, noting that the iPhone Duo feels more difficult to manage with one hand than its competitor. She attributed this to the physical shape of the phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is taller and narrower, which makes its cover screen easier to reach and operate. The iPhone Duo has a different physical proportion that complicates one-handed use.
The software interface on the iPhone Duo is the primary driver of the reduced usable area. Apple implemented a dock on the right side of the small display to simplify navigation. However, this vertical strip consumes screen real estate that could otherwise hold media or text. Johnson described this as a restriction on an already small display. A separate post on X highlighted the visual difference between the two devices, showing the empty space created by the iPhone Duo's layout.
The comparison depends on user settings. In a video demonstration, Johnson configured the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to use a bottom navigation bar instead of gesture controls. This setting reduces the amount of free screen space on the Samsung phone. For users who rely on gestures on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the difference in available space is more pronounced, with almost no wasted area on the cover screen.
Apple's design philosophy for the iPhone Duo involves shrinking the available space to stretch media vertically. This approach mimics the aspect ratio of a standard slab smartphone. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 takes the opposite approach by leaving the full width open for main content. This method allows for a wider view of applications on the small screen.
The iPhone Duo is currently available to buyers, though stock is limited. Samsung continues to sell the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has maintained a strong market position. The two devices offer different solutions to the same hardware constraint, with Apple prioritizing a familiar vertical layout and Samsung prioritizing maximum display width.
