Apple Music users who land on a broken page now find a working replica of the original iPod. The device is hidden below the standard error message, where a prompt reads "give this a spin instead." Clicking the prompt opens a fully interactive virtual player.
The virtual device features a responsive click wheel and standard controls. Users can browse a library of 1,029 playable songs. The interface mirrors the layout of the 2001 original, with sections for Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings. According to Engadget, the experience runs better on mobile devices. Their writer reported that the virtual iPod was difficult to operate on a desktop computer.
The track list includes artists with early 2000s appeal, such as Baha Men, blink-182, and Eminem. An Engadget writer based in the United Kingdom also saw Daniel Bedingfield, The Fratellis, and Klaxons in the list. The outlet noted uncertainty about whether those specific artists appear for users in the United States. Each song plays for a maximum of 90 seconds before stopping.
The Easter egg includes a hidden game called Brick. This Breakout style game was a secret feature on the first physical iPod. Notebook Check found that users can access it by holding the center button on the About screen for a few seconds. The virtual iPod does not require an active Apple Music account to function.
Apple introduced the original iPod 25 years ago. The device was marketed with the slogan putting 1,000 songs in your pocket. The new virtual tribute references that claim with a library slightly larger than the original promise. The feature appears to be a one-time anniversary marker rather than a permanent change to the site's structure.
