Android Gemini Overhaul Shifts Navigation
A server-side update restructures the Android interface, unifying scattered settings and repositioning core tools for better accessibility.

A significant interface shift is currently hitting Android devices as Google restructures the core navigation of its Gemini application. The change addresses long-standing user complaints about fragmented menus and deep-buried features. By moving the search bar to the top-right corner, the company aims to streamline the initial user experience. This adjustment places the search function in a more intuitive location for quick access. The move signals a broader effort to simplify how users interact with the AI assistant on mobile.
The primary focus of the redesign is the side panel, which has undergone a complete rearrangement. New chat remains the first item in the list, preserving the default starting point for users. However, the Library section has moved up from the bottom of the drawer to sit directly beneath the new chat option. This vertical realignment reduces the distance between the two most frequently used features. It creates a more logical flow for users who frequently switch between creating new prompts and reviewing past conversations. The visual hierarchy now prioritizes immediate creation over archival access.
To prevent the navigation drawer from becoming overcrowded, the update limits the initial display to five items. A dedicated 'More' option appears at the bottom of this shortened list. Tapping this button expands the full menu, revealing additional tools and features. For subscribers to the AI Ultra tier, the expanded list includes specific entries such as Images, Scheduled, and Daily brief. Other visible options include Customize, Students, Videos, and Gems. This approach keeps the initial view clean while ensuring power users can still reach every feature with minimal taps.
The settings experience has also been consolidated into a single, unified page. Previously, preferences were split between the account menu and a separate Gemini Settings area. This division often confused users looking for specific adjustments. Google has now merged these areas, leaving the account menu for basic tasks like switching profiles or seeking help. The new dedicated settings page opens with options to manage the account and usage limits. This structure provides a clear entry point for users who need to adjust their subscription or data consumption.
The Preferences section of the new page lists a wide array of customization options. These include Notifications, Personal Intelligence, Avatar, and Task settings. Users can also adjust Theme, Skills, Voice, and Media preferences. Device controls and Cart and orders are also available in this section. The Theme option is marked as new, indicating a recent addition to the feature set. Gemini Notebook is also listed here, reflecting its growing importance in the ecosystem. This centralized location makes it easier to fine-tune the assistant's behavior without navigating multiple menus.
Two additional sections complete the reorganized settings page. The Data and privacy section allows users to manage Import memory and contact info from their devices. It also provides access to Gemini Apps Activity and public links. A Privacy Help Hub is included for further guidance. The final section, Get support, lists standard options such as Help, Report a problem, and About. Updates are also listed here, ensuring users can check for new versions. This comprehensive layout ensures that all critical management tools are accessible from one place.
This update follows similar changes that reached iOS, macOS, and web platforms last week. Those updates coincided with the launch of Gemini 4 Argon. The Android rollout is now becoming widely available through a server-side update. This method means users do not need to download a new version of the app. The change arrives silently, ensuring a seamless transition for most users. It aligns the Android experience with the rest of the Google AI ecosystem.
Recent developments in the Gemini app have included several other notable changes. Gemini Notebook is now available as a Connected App for deeper integration. Free users have transitioned to Auto models as the app introduces new thinking levels. A new Map tool has also arrived, replacing the previous slash shortcut with an at symbol. These changes demonstrate a continuous effort to refine the user experience. The current side panel and settings redesign is the latest step in that process.
